Summertime in the hills: three suggestions for your vacation
Summer in the Langhe and Monferrato is underrated. The sunny days get lost in the longing for autumn mists, harvest fairs and local festivals celebrating the abundance of the season. But the sunshine glimmering on the vineyards, the pleasure of warmth on your shoulders and little crowds make a summer escape to the hills all the more enticing.
Being a UNESCO World Heritage, international tourism to the Langhe and Monferrato has increased significantly over the years. As the area is most famous for wine and truffles, the autumn months are plentiful with visitors imbibing and indulging in local delicacies. However, the colder weather prohibits people from enjoying the outdoor activities and vineyards in their full glory. That is why we recommend a summertime stay, the best time for the adventurous soul to explore these hills.
The best thing about visiting in the summer? The wineries! The stress and rush of the harvest season is not yet upon them. The hills are quiet with the work of nature, not the work of man. Which means it is the perfect time to engage in relaxing winery tours, lingering over the tastings and having the time to speak with winemakers.
Now that you are thinking about a summertime visit to the Langhe and Monferrato, we have three outstanding suggestions for things to do that tick all the boxes: outdoor fun, cultural curiosities and of course, food and wine!
Monferrato Active

The summer Renaissance of these UNESCO hills has helped bring new attention to outdoor adventure tourism, boosting the prevalence and ease of activities such as touring by bike. The Langhe and Monferrato are areas that are best explored in an immersive way, truly experiencing the colours, smells and tastes of the rich cultural history. The size of the areas makes them perfect to explore by bike. Leave the roads well beaten and discover the beautiful landscapes on paths only accessible on two wheels.
This year Monferrato Active, an all-female owned and operate tour agency, opened in Nizza Monferrato offering bicycle tours of the surrounding areas on e-bikes. They have developed tours for all kinds of travelers, including families with kids, and thanks to the electric-powered bikes, the hills are easily conquered by all! The bike routes are entirely customizable to the parts of the Langhe and Monferrato you want to see. Choose the “Terra del Barbera,” the “Terra del Moscato,” or the “Terre del Barolo” on bike and then relax in the most luxurious facilities in each respective area.

Superheroes in the vineyards

Michele Chiarlo winery is a big supporter of fine culture. The the last year they have hosted ARTE IN CANTINA, and plan to continue the project which hosts a rotating exhibit every six months of the artists that originally built creations for Art Park La Court in Calamandrana.
The time has come to feature a local artist, after showing the works of Dedo Ruggero Fossati and Mark Cooper. The next six months will showcase the works of Paolo Baldassarre, a ‘cellarman’ and has created paintings from oenological materials. For his portraits of superheroes (a great passion of both the artist and Alberto Chiarlo) Paolo used microclippings from the labels of Barolo, Arneis, Moscato and Albarossa. He created twenty pieces in this style, depicting superheroes from Hulk to Wonder Woman, Batman to Flash Gordon, telling the story of paper as a medium in art and in winemaking.
The exhibition Superheroes in Vigna & Recyc-Light is part of the larger Arte in Cantina – I magnifici 9 artisti del Parco Orme su La Court exhibition, under the art direction of Gian Carlo Ferrais.
