The Consorzio del Nizza DOCG Is Officially Recognized

A new chapter for an appellation Michele Chiarlo has supported from the very beginning

On June 22, 2026, Italy’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry officially recognized the Consorzio del Nizza DOCG.

For Monferrato, it marks an important step forward. For Michele Chiarlo, it also carries a deeper significance: Nizza is a denomination the family has believed in and invested in from the very beginning, long before it achieved DOCG status.

That commitment is rooted in a clear conviction: Barbera is not only one of Piemonte’s historic varieties, but a grape capable of expressing place with depth, elegance and character.

For the Chiarlo family, Nizza has always been one of Barbera’s finest expressions. This vision took shape over time, beginning with Tenuta La Court, acquired in 1995 in Castelnuovo Calcea, in the historic heart of Barbera d’Asti and Nizza DOCG.

Today, that journey enters a new phase. Stefano Chiarlo has been confirmed as President of the Consorzio del Nizza DOCG, working alongside Vice Presidents Gianni Bertolino and Daniele Chiappone.

“This achievement crowns the dream of an association founded almost twenty-five years ago, yet rooted in a much longer history and in a strongly united community of producers,” said Stefano. “Our first thanks go to the institutions for their constant support, but our deepest gratitude goes to the producers: to those who believed in the project from day one, and to all those who have joined us over the years.”

The new Consorzio builds on the work of the Associazione Produttori del Nizza, founded in 2002, and will oversee the protection, promotion and development of the denomination. Its role goes beyond wine itself, embracing the wider territory of Nizza DOCG: 18 municipalities in the heart of UNESCO-listed Monferrato.

The official recognition is the result of a long, shared path that has allowed Nizza to define its identity and strengthen its presence in Italy and abroad. Today, the denomination brings together 97 member wineries, more than 180 labels and around 1 million bottles sold in 2025.

“Our first goal will be to preserve the spirit that has always defined the Associazione Produttori del Nizza: not simply to protect the denomination, but to remain a place of dialogue and growth for producers, and a way to bring value to the territory and to everyone who is part of it.”

To protect, promote and share Nizza DOCG today means continuing to give voice to a bond that has always been at its heart: wine, land and the people who bring them together.
