Michele Chiarlo Presents Barolo Cannubi Riserva 2016

2,500 bottles from the most renowned Barolo vineyard, available from September 1st

Cannubi is known as one of the oldest crus in Italy, as evidenced by the bottle bearing the inscription “Cannubi 1752”, the first to carry the name of a single vineyard on the label. Since then, it has been featured in the most prominent anthologies on the vineyards of Langhe, such as the Monografia sulla Viticoltura ed Enologia nella Provincia di Cuneo– written in 1879 by Lorenzo Fantini. This longstanding prominence can be attributed to the presence of unique characteristics – such as optimal exposure to sunlight and winds and the particular soil composition – which yield wines with complete, harmonious and distinct expressions: the epitome of the souls of the denomination. These characteristics made this cru highly sought after by many but only cultivated by few.

To honor this extraordinary vocation and the venerable history of this vineyard, Michele Chiarlo has chosen to produce Barolo DOCG Cannubi Riserva, available for the first time with the 2016 vintage.

The property vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are in the historic heart of Cannubi, in the central part of the hill facing the town of Barolo, enjoying excellent southeast to southwest exposure. The plot is situated on a steep slope, terraced with grassed ridges, which promote exposure, preserve soil integrity and combat hydrogeological instability. This extremely delicate operation is the only one of its kind in the area and required the supervision of the Swiss University ofChangin for its implementation.

Even the soils express harmony, thanks to the perfect combination of Sant’Agata Fossili Marls, which gradually disappear as altitude increases, and outcrops of Diano Sandstones. The result is a type of soil low in organic matter but rich in sands (over 30%) and microelements such as iron and manganese.

Michele Chiarlo’s Cannubi Riserva is a brazenly bold wine that strives to capture the soul of perfection, starting from the vintages. The wine is exclusively vinified during the best seasons, when climate and weather conditions – those with regular and utterly classic trends – have allowed the slow and balanced polyphenolic ripening of the grapes.

“2016 is an outstandingly classic vintage – says Stefano Chiarlo, winemaker and co-owner with his father Michele and brother Alberto – An excellent one, characterized by rare complexity and remarkable aging potential, as well as a surprising elegance. It’s also an incredibly special year for our family because all our crus have been certified “sustainable wines” since 2016.

Barolo Cannubi Riserva 2016 magnifies the incredible strength of the vineyard of origin, standing at the top of Michele Chiarlo’s production, with an extremely limited edition of 2,500 bottles.
