Montemareto 2023 – Barbera, in vertical

Steep to the edge of extreme: the Montemareto vineyard reaches nearly a 60% incline, pushing Barbera to give its absolute best.

Here, the vines grow on a mix of fossil-rich Sant’Agata marl and light-colored Asti sands, high in magnesium and calcium – a complex, mineral-rich soil that gives depth and identity to the wine. Yields are extremely low – around 1 kg per vine – with a strict selection already in the vineyard, ensuring concentrated, pristine grapes. It’s a daily challenge that results in wines shaped by freshness and fruit-driven precision, further refined by ageing exclusively in large oak casks.

This is the origin of Montemareto Nizza DOCG, from the hills of Castelnuovo Calcea, near our La Court plots, heading toward Mombercelli. It’s the star of Lot 43, available exclusively to Wine Club members.

2023 was a demanding vintage, marked by heat and drought, interrupted only by timely August rains. The result is a Nizza with deep color, a bouquet of ripe fruit and subtle sweet notes, and a full, velvety palate lifted by unexpected freshness – the key to its balance.
