Michele Chiarlo Named European Producer of the Year at the 2025 Sommelier Wine Awards
All five wines submitted received medals, including two golds and a triple award for Gavi Rovereto
Good news from the UK: Michele Chiarlo has been awarded European Producer of the Year at the 2025 Sommelier Wine Awards (SWA), premier competition exclusively dedicated to wines for the on-trade and premium hospitality sector.
This prestigious accolade confirms the winery’s consistent excellence across its range: all five submitted wines earned medals, including two golds and a triple recognition for the Gavi di Gavi Rovereto 2023, which won a Gold Medal, a “Critics’ Choice” award—granted to wines that impress the jury with their character and style, regardless of price or category—and the “By the Glass” award, highlighting labels with outstanding value-for-money ratio, ideal for by-the-glass service in a variety of dining settings.
Award-winning wines:
- Nizza DOCG Riserva La Court 2021 – Gold Medal
• Gavi DOCG del Comune di Gavi Rovereto 2023 – Gold Medal, “Critics’ Choice”, “By the Glass”
• Nizza DOCG Cipressi 2022 – Silver Medal
• Barolo DOCG Cerequio 2019 – Silver Medal
• Barbera d’Asti DOCG Le Orme 2022 – Bronze Medal
Launched in 2007, the Sommelier Wine Awards have become a benchmark for UK buyers and for producers looking to strengthen their presence in the international restaurant scene.
Wines are blind-tasted by a highly qualified panel including Master Sommeliers, Masters of Wine, sommeliers, buyers, and on-trade consultants. Entries are assessed by category and judged not only for quality but also by gastronomic versatility, typicity, character, and commercial appeal.
Following each tasting session, judges share their notes to reach a collective decision. This approach ensures impartiality, credibility, and commercial relevance, making SWA one of the leading competitions for international on-trade buyers.
“ Being named European Producer of the Year fills us with pride – not just for the individual medals, but because it recognises the consistency and identity of our work. We’ve always believed in the potential of great terroirs and a style that speaks directly to the world of hospitality. This award belongs to our entire team and to the partners who believe in Italian quality every day – including our long-standing UK importer, Hallgarten & Novum Wines, who continue to be instrumental in sharing our wines with the British market“, says Alberto Chiarlo, co-owner, marketing and sales director.
