came `Court', a 2000 vintage Barbera d'Asti
`superiore' (£19.95), which had a purple-rimmed
black cherry colour, a blackberry-like aroma which opened
up spicily, similar sweetness yet loaded with youthful
grip, like an over-enthusiastic handshake. Full of fruit
but dormant.
Yet
Chiarlo's Barbaresco `Asili' (£29.49)
was, for a 2000, displaying a surprising amount of
maturity, less deep, even a touch of tawny at the
rim. Nose more nutty On the palate an engaging softness
masking a dry, tannic, finish.
Admittedly
an inadequate comment on a wine with distinctiveness
and class.
