DECANTER - Michael BROADBENT's article

"First, a range from a producer in Piedmont I have long admired; Michele Chiarlo. As distinctive and elegant as his beautifully designed labels".

Not cheap (the importers, Hallgarten, gave me the current retail prices).

Top of the range, around £32 per bottle is Chiarlo's 1999 Cerrequio: fairly deep, plummy coloured; nose initially reluctant but took to air like a duck to water; sweet, soft yet with an as-yet-immature Barolo bite. Ideally more bottle age, but delicious with Daphne's pasta dishes. [>>]

Next came `Court', a 2000 vintage Barbera d'Asti `superiore' (£19.95), which had a purple-rimmed black cherry colour, a blackberry-like aroma which opened up spicily, similar sweetness yet loaded with youthful grip, like an over-enthusiastic handshake. Full of fruit but dormant.

Yet Chiarlo's Barbaresco `Asili' (£29.49) was, for a 2000, displaying a surprising amount of maturity, less deep, even a touch of tawny at the rim. Nose more nutty On the palate an engaging softness masking a dry, tannic, finish.

Admittedly an inadequate comment on a wine with distinctiveness and class.
